Yew
Taxus baccata — the 5,000-year churchyard survivor, the longbow's wood, a lethal cardiac poison, and the precursor of a frontline cancer drug.
Taxus baccata does not fit the herbalist’s usual categories. It is not a healing plant in any conventional sense — its toxicity blocked most practical medicinal use for centuries. It is not primarily a kitchen-garden herb or a strewing herb or a charm ingredient. What it is: the oldest living tree in Britain, the source of the medieval longbow, the carrier of a cardiac poison potent enough to kill livestock with a mouthful of needles, and the tree whose bark eventually yielded paclitaxel, now on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines.
The death associations are real and earned. So is the longevity. Those two facts are not contradictory — they are the same fact, looked at from different angles.
The tree
European yew, English yew, common yew — all the same species, Taxus baccata, an evergreen gymnosperm in the family Taxaceae, distributed natively across much of Eurasia and northwest Africa. It grows slow and close-grained, to a height of ten to twenty metres in maturity, with dark needles and, in autumn, the small red arils — fleshy seed-coverings — that are the only part of the plant not poisonous to humans and most animals.
The generic name Taxus may derive from the Greek toxon, a bow, the weapons connection embedded in the taxonomy itself. The common English word yew descends from Old English īw or ēow, traceable through Proto-Germanic iwo to a Proto-Indo-European root, with cognates in Old Irish ēo and Welsh ywen. The tree’s name is among the older plant-words in the language.
Its lifespan is the biological fact that most anchors its symbolism. The Fortingall Yew in Perthshire, Scotland — the most famous specimen — was recorded in 1769 with a trunk girth of 52 feet; modern estimates place its age at an average of 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest non-clonal trees in Europe. Across Britain and Ireland, at least 500 churchyards contain yew trees older than the buildings beside which they stand. Age estimation is imprecise by nature: yew trunks hollow with centuries, making ring counts impossible on the oldest specimens. The uncertainty is part of the honest accounting.
The churchyard question
The association of yew with Christian burial grounds is so thoroughgoing — and so old — that it obscures how many different explanations are plausible, none of them conclusive on its own.
The most argued-over question is sequence: did the church come to the yew, or the yew to the church? Robert Bevan-Jones, in The Ancient Yew (2002), makes a detailed case that the majority of the oldest churchyard yews in Wales and England mark the sites of hermitages or cells established by Celtic saints in the early medieval period — and that the trees were already there, established as local sacred markers, before any church was built. On this reading, Christian burial grounds were grafted onto pre-existing sacred places, the yews becoming an inadvertent record of a landscape older than the parishes that now contain them.
Practical explanations run alongside the sacred ones and should not be dismissed. Yew is poisonous to cattle, horses, and sheep; planting it around a churchyard keeps livestock off consecrated ground without requiring a maintained fence. The lawyer and antiquary Daines Barrington noted in Observations on the Statutes (1766) that yews were planted as windbreaks for the low-built churches of the medieval period, the dense foliage serving the building better than any deciduous tree could in winter. King Edward I ordered yew trees planted in churchyards specifically to protect the fabric of church buildings. Branches of yew were carried on Palm Sunday in parishes where imported palm was unavailable — a practical substitution that blurred into symbolic equivalence over time.
None of these explanations cancels the others. Practical reasons and sacred reasons have always coexisted. The tree that keeps cattle from the dead also, in the same motion, draws the eye of anyone who has spent an afternoon in a country churchyard and looked up.
Greco-Roman and pre-Christian associations
Before the Christian period, the funereal symbolism was no less present. According to both Pliny the Elder and the poet Ovid, the yew was a tree of the underworld, growing near the entrance to Hades, sacred to the Furies and employed in ritual purification. In the natural history tradition of the ancient world, it was a tree of hell — its shade considered dangerous, its berries toxic even to birds in some accounts (a claim that is botanically false; birds eat the fleshy aril without harm, though the enclosed seed passes through undamaged). Geoffrey Grigson, in The Englishman’s Flora (1955), noted the apotropaic valence of the red aril: the colour associated in European plant-lore with protective power, giving the yew a dual character — beneficent as a guardian, funereal in its evergreen patience and its poison.
The longbow
The yew’s role in medieval warfare is one of the least mystical and most consequential chapters in its history. The English longbow — the weapon of Crécy, Poitiers, and Agincourt — was made from yew specifically because of what the tree’s slow growth produces: a stave that naturally combines heartwood and sapwood in the same piece of timber. The dense reddish heartwood resists compression; the pale sapwood near the bark flexes under tension. A longbow stave cut across the heartwood-sapwood boundary exploits both properties simultaneously — the tree’s own structure does the engineering work.
Yew wood was also put to structural use beyond archery: a post made of yew was proverbially said to outlast one made of iron. The hardness that made it prized for bows made it equally suited to fine furniture, turned vessels, and musical instruments.
Edward III issued a decree in 1349 commanding men to practice archery rather than wasting time with football or cock-fighting — an index of how central the longbow was to English military strategy and how dependent that strategy was on this one slow-growing tree. Whether the folk etymology that derives yeomen from yew men — meaning specifically archers — is reliable is disputed; scholars note it may be a later rationalisation of a word whose actual origin is elsewhere.
Poison
The pharmacological picture is precise and severe. All parts of Taxus baccata except the fleshy red aril are toxic — leaves, seeds, bark, wood — with toxins that can be absorbed through ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. The primary toxic agents are taxine alkaloids, principally taxine A and the more potent taxine B. Taxine B, the major alkaloid fraction, acts by blocking sodium and calcium ion channels in cardiac muscle cells, disrupting the heart’s electrical signalling and pumping function. Clinical symptoms of yew poisoning include nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, shallow breathing, and tachycardia; cardiac arrest is the terminal mechanism in fatal cases.
Taxine was first isolated and identified as the compound responsible for the European yew’s toxicity in 1856. The isolation date matters: it means the European scientific tradition had confirmed the mechanism of yew’s lethality at least a century before anyone thought the same plant could be useful against cancer.
A toxicological footnote: the fleshy aril itself is not poisonous, and birds eat it freely. The seed inside the aril is highly toxic. Swallowing a whole aril without chewing is technically survivable; biting through the seed coat is not. This botanical precision — the one edible part wrapped around the lethal part — is, in retrospect, an apt emblem for the whole tree.
From poison to drug
The connection between yew’s toxicity and its pharmaceutical value is not incidental. The same cellular chemistry that makes taxine alkaloids cardiac poisons — the ability to interfere with molecular structures inside cells — made researchers suspect that other yew compounds might affect cancer cells in useful ways.
In 1962, USDA botanist Arthur Barclay collected bark samples from Taxus brevifolia, the Pacific yew, in Washington State as part of a National Cancer Institute program systematically screening plant material for cytotoxic activity. The bark extract showed activity against cancer cell lines. Monroe E. Wall and Mansukh Wani at the Research Triangle Institute in North Carolina isolated the active compound and called it paclitaxel. It functions as an antimitotic agent — not by poisoning ion channels but by stabilising the microtubule structures that cells use to separate chromosomes during division. A cancer cell that cannot divide cannot proliferate.
Early production of paclitaxel required stripping bark from Pacific yews in quantities that threatened the species. The semi-synthesis route developed by Pierre Potier in France resolved this: Potier extracted 10-deacetylbaccatin III (10-DAB) from the needles of Taxus baccata — the common European yew — providing a renewable precursor from which paclitaxel could be chemically completed. The needles, unlike the bark, can be harvested without killing the tree. European churchyard yews became, in a narrow pharmacological sense, a production resource.
Paclitaxel (sold under the brand name Taxol) now appears on the World Health Organisation’s Model List of Essential Medicines. It is used to treat breast, ovarian, non-small cell lung, and pancreatic cancers, as well as AIDS-related Kaposi’s sarcoma. The tree that Pliny and Ovid planted near the mouth of the underworld is now deployed against one of the leading causes of death in the modern world.
Correspondences in modern practice
Modern witchcraft and Pagan practice assigns yew to Saturn and the element of earth, to death, transition, and rebirth — the evergreen quality read as continuity across the threshold, the longevity read as survival of what others cannot endure. It appears in Samhain workings and ancestor-focused rites. Its associations in the modern system are broadly consistent with the pre-modern symbolic record, which is unusual enough to be worth noting.
What modern sources tend to omit is the practical weight of the toxicity. Yew is not a plant for making teas, tinctures, or sachets that touch the skin for any length of time. The symbolism of death that practitioners work with is literal pharmacology before it is metaphor. The tree earns its associations the hard way.
